Amirabdollahian made the remark in talks with his Maltese counterpart Ian Borg whose country holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council (UNSC). The two met on Thursday in New York City on the sidelines of a UNSC session.
As to the powerful response of the Iranian armed forces to the Israeli regime’s assassination of Iran’s military advisors in Syria, Amirabdollahian noted that the response was within the framework of legitimate self-defense and international law.
Praising Malta’s efforts to help end the Israeli genocide in Gaza, the top Iranian diplomat said that the main element that secures stability in the region is the cessation of the Israeli regime’s crimes in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank as well as the establishment of a sustainable ceasefire.
The Maltese foreign minister, for his part, cautioned about the risks of the spillover of tensions in the West Asia region, noting that Malta promotes de-escalation in the region and makes all-out efforts to help establish regional peace and security.
The two sides also called for the expansion of mutual ties Iran and Malta in all political, economic, and cultural arenas.
