Iran busts 670 tons of drugs in 11 months: Police chief

Birjand, March 13, IRNA- Iran has seized 670 tons of narcotics during the past 11 months of the current Persian year (21 March 2018- 21 February 2019), a senior anti-drugs police official says.

“Since the start of the year, 670 tons of drugs have been busted all around Iran,” Anti-Narcotics Police Chief, Brigadier GeneralMohammad Masoud Zahedian said on Wednesday, adding that “majority of the found drugs is opium.”

The police chief said there’s been a two percent rise in the number of detained individuals in connection with drug-trafficking.

He warned against a rise in traditional and modern drugs such as methamphetamine in the neighboring Afghanistan.

“It’s a red alarm for the entire world especially our country,” he cautioned.

Zahedian went on to sound the alarm even louder, saying Afghanistan “will turn into the first methamphetamine producer in the world in future.” He called on the international community to pay more attention to this issue.

Iran has been actively combating drug trafficking on its borders in a bid to stop their consumption inside the country as well as its transit to Europe.
