UNGA summit turning point for Iran’s diplomatic success

Tehran, IRNA – The annual summit of the United Nations General Assembly in 2021 is a proper opportunity for President Ebrahim Raisi’s administration to enhance Iran’s diplomatic position in the world, a former Iranian diplomat says.

Mohsen Pakaein, former Iranian ambassador to Azerbaijan Republic, told IRNA on Wednesday that the annual meeting of the UNGA provides member states with the opportunity to hold discussions from September to end of December and sometimes until January next year, and that the event paves the ground for Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian to spell out Iran’s principle policy on the need for removal of sanctions.

Amirabdollahian’s presence in the UNGA annual summit is a turning point in the diplomatic performance of the 13th Iranian administration, which can pave the way for future diplomatic successes.

Describing the summit as an important chance for diplomats and foreign ministers to discuss international issues, Pakaein said that a multilateral summit is usually held, where foreign ministers take part in, and that the Iranian top diplomat can find good opportunity to hold talks with his counterparts of the 4+1 group (the UK, France, Russia, and China) on Tehran’s definite policy over the removal of anti-Iran sanctions.

Naturally, foreign ministers of different countries are keen on being acquainted with the viewpoints of newly-appointed Iranian foreign minister, he said, adding that following Iran’s acceptance as a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the UNGA summit is a significant chance for the Iranian authorities to enhance political exchanges with other states.

The trip to New York to take part in the UNGA annual summit happens after the Islamic Republic’s great achievement in the SCO, the former diplomat said, arguing that the permanent membership will strengthen Iran’s role in security arrangements of the region as well as upgrade level of cooperation between Tehran, Beijing, and Moscow.

As to the recent development in Afghanistan, Pakaeen noted that the Iranian FM can hold talks with his counterparts on the sidelines of the UNGA summit in order to resplve the current situation in the neighboring country and help restore peace and security in the war-torn state.

Describing the American withdrawal from the region and ending occupation of Western Asian countries as a definite necessity and destiny, he said that the United States’ scandalous pull-out from Afghanistan shows such an incident will happen in Iraq sooner or later.
