Ahmad Masoumifar told IRNA on Saturday that about one month ago, China requested that the provinces of Xinjiang and Khorasan Razavi in Iran start their cooperation, and this proposal was announced by the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Khorasan Razavi Governorate.
For various reasons, Xinjiang has been accused of separatism, so the Chinese government is very sensitive about which Islamic countries have relations with this province, he added.
Masoumifar said that the Chinese are very sensitive toward a country like Saudi Arabia having relations with Xinjiang, but it seems that Iran is the only Islamic country that the Chinese are not sensitive about in this regard.
Both sides are following up to launch direct flights between Mashhad and Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang province, the official said.
Xinjiang Province in western China has long-standing cultural affinities with Iran thanks to the historical Silk Road. In the last decade, Xinjiang Province has played a key role in the Belt and Road Initiative of the Chinese government. Due to its geographical location, the province has been the main transit route for goods and services from China to Central Asia and Europe. This province is also one of the important hubs for agriculture, industry and renewable energy in China.
Xinjiang has a population of 26 million. The province is the largest in China with an area of 1.6 million square kilometers.
