Amirabdollahian, who still stays in New York following the 77 UN General Assembly to hold talks with international figures, met with Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths on Monday.
The Iranian top diplomat appreciated Griffiths’ efforts in facilitating international humanitarian activities, noting that Iran backs such efforts with the aim of reducing human sufferings.
The FM went on to say that the UN is expected to pay heed to lift the blockade of Yemen along with helping political dialogue among Yemeni factions in order to bolster ceasefire in the war-stricken country.
The two sides also discussed political developments and the humanitarian situations in Afghanistan and Syria, when Amirabdollahian stated that about 5 million Afghan migrants are residing in Iran and several others enter Iranian borders on a daily basis, but there is not any humanitarian support by the UN for the big population.
Referring to fair distribution of humanitarian aids among Syrian people, he urged international agencies to pay more serious attention to the Syrians, when they suffer from a lack of healthy water and electricity, while terrorists and militias enjoy different situation in Idlib governorate.
As to Iran’s efforts to help end the war in Ukraine, the FM called for more attention to Ukrainian refugees.
Griffiths, for his part, expressed gratitude for Iran’s hospitality especially when it comes to Afghan refugees, naming the Islamic Republic as the distinguished example of embracing and assisting refugees in the world.
The UN official further pointed to the lack of budget for procuring humanitarian aids in the three mentioned countries, noting that certain countries have not yet complied with the financial commitments to aid these needy states.
He stressed the need for continuation of ceasefire in Yemen as well as creation of economic stability, adding that Iran’s fair attention to the crisis in Ukraine is appreciable.
