FM: Iran to send energy ministry delegation to Afghanistan to pursue water right

Tehran, IRNA – Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian in a phone talk with with Acting Foreign Minister of Afghanistan's Taliban Amir Khan Muttaqi said that the Islamic Republic is dispatching a delegation from the country's energy ministry to Afghanistan to follow up Iran's Hirmand water share right.

Amirabdollahian's phone talk with Muttaqi came following Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's order to pursue the issue of Iran’s right of Hirmand water share.

Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian referred to the recent heavy rainfall in Afghanistan that has highly increased the Hirmand water flow, expressing hope that the artificially created obstacles in the way of the flow of water towards Iran will be eliminated and Iran will receive its water share of Hirmand.

The Iranian top diplomat said that receiving Iran’s water share will be an important index, showing how committed the ruling group in Afghanistan are about their international commitments.

Amirabdollahian said that the people of Iran’s Sistan and Balouchestan and their representatives in the Parliament are seriously demanding, and if the issue of Iran’s share of Hirmand is now resolved rapidly and seriously, it will affect the other issues in bilateral cooperation negatively.

The foreign minister said that a high ranking delegation of the Iranian Energy Ministry will visit Afghanistan in very near future to survey and eliminated the existing obstacles, and to consult the issue of Iran’s water share with concerned officials in Afghanistan.

Muttaqi, for his part, said in the phone talk that the two countries’ relations are brotherly and in the path of assisting the Afghanistan nation.

He welcomed the Iranian Energy Ministry delegation upcoming visit of his country, arguing that Afghanistan is committed to let Iran’s share of the Hirmand River flow into Iran, but when there is sufficient in the river.

Amirabdollahian said that a joint team of technicians will survey the river path and turn it to its proper flowing route, so that the people in both sides of the border could benefit from it, and water will not be wasted.
