Tehran censures UN rapporteur for backing illegal verdict against Iranian citizen

Tehran, IRNA – Deputy chief of the Iranian Judiciary and secretary of High Council for Human Rights Kazem Gharibabadi has condemned UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Situation in Iran Javaid Rehman for supporting an illegal verdict by a Swedish court against an Iranian citizen.

Gharibabadi wrote on his Twitter account, “It is extremely disappointing that Javaid Rehman has chosen to publicly support arbitrary detention and sham trial of an Iranian citizen instead of calling out the Swedish authorities and holding them to account for the gross violation of fundamental human rights of the victim.”

The Iranian official also wrote that the press statement of Rehman in support of the blatant injustice is another sign that shows he is keen on misusing his mission, which has been formed with the support of the UK, in order to highlight a campaign to appease anti-Iran opposition at the expense of victimizing underlying principles of human rights.

On Thursday, a court in Sweden sentenced Hamid Nouri, an Iranian citizen,  to life imprisonment; he was arrested based on unfounded charges claimed by the terrorist Mujahedin-e-Khalq Organization (MKO).

Nouri has also been sentenced to expulsion from Sweden and banned from returning to the European state. The Iranian citizen has been sentenced to payment of compensation to the so-called suffering families. As declared, Nouri must remain in custody until the sentence is executed.

Swedish police forces illegally arrested Nouri at a Stockholm airport in November 2019 and the Iranian citizen was sent to trial on the basis of fake charges made by the MKO.

The Iranian citizen was imprisoned in solitary confinement and did not have the right to meet his family members for long periods.

In response to the illegal trial, the Swedish charge d’affaires in Tehran was summoned by the Iranian Foreign Ministry to condemn the content of the media statement and the verdict issued by the Stockholm District Court against the Iranian citizen imprisoned in that country and to submit Iran’s official protest note to the diplomat.

The director of the Western Europe Division III of the Iranian Foreign Ministry expressed Iran’s strong objection to the statements of the Swedish court authorities and the country's judicial system and the verdict issued against Nouri and considered it illegal and against the standards of international law.

Iran urged the Swedish Government to overturn the verdict issued against Nouri, remove the effect of the sentence, release him immediately, compensate for the damages, and guarantee that such actions will not be repeated in the future.
