What’s behind setting deadline for Vienna talks?

Tehran, IRNA – The next round of talks in Vienna, Austria, to resume negotiations on reviving the 2015 nuclear deal and lifting anti-Iran sanctions will kick off in an atmosphere that the Western powers and their media outlets fanning the flame of hue and cry to pursue their own agenda.

Iran Newspaper reported on Saturday:

The Vienna talks are going to resume on December 27, when representatives from Iran, the European Union and the P4+1 group of countries – Britain, France, Russia, China plus Germany – will hold the next round of the Joint Commission meeting of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Usually, the Western states do not hold official meetings during Christmas Eve and New Year holidays, but when it comes to revival of the nuclear deal all negotiators showed that they do not want to waste time, these are remarks made by Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia's permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna.

This shows that new Iranian approach has hindered political and time-wasting games by violators of the JCPOA, who did not abide by their commitments under the deal; however, they try to pretend that they are in a hurry to reach an agreement, so they attempt to put the ball in Iran’s court in order to use it as a pretext to give less and take more.

Iranian negotiating team succeeded in persuading the other delegations to accept the new draft texts, which ask the Western side to keep their end of bargain and lift anti-Iran sanctions.

Setting a deadline for the Iranian team has been on the agenda of different media and political figures from the European troika (Britain, France and Germany), to the United States and the Zionist regime.

The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and United States Special Representative for Iran Robert Malley have tried to warn Iranians that the time for diplomacy and negotiations is running. The European states have also issued a statement a few days ago on this issue.

However, the Islamic Republic has time and again declared that it opposes erosive talks. The Western powers claim that they are worried about Iran’s nuclear progress, but a look at Iranian nuclear activities in the past eight years, when Iran and the West were discussing a nuclear agreement, shows that Tehran was carrying on its nuclear program, so the Western politicians’ reasoning for being in such a hurry is not acceptable.

Moreover, the Iranian nuclear sites have been under the most serious supervision by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the UN nuclear watchdog has repeatedly announced that the Iranian nuclear activities are peaceful.

Therefore, it seems that the West tries to push Iran towards a bad agreement, which would not be in favor of the Iranians and would not lift sanctions effectively. The West’s allegation on having limited time for reaching consensus on revival of the JCPOA, when they do not show seriousness to lift sanctions, is a repetition of their disloyalty to their commitments under the deal.

The Iranian new administration pursues the policy of reaching a good agreement on revival of the JCPOA and removal of anti-Iran sanctions. The US’s sanction policy has borne no fruit for them, so, contrary to the Western claims, the time is not running against Iran.
