Setting deadline West’s tactic to put pressure on Iran

Tehran, IRNA – Prior to resumption of Vienna talks, the Islamic Republic of Iran declared that Iranians do not desire long-term negotiations, but Tehran also underlined that they will not succumb to Western powers’ deadlines to reach undesirable consensus under pressure of threat and sanction.

A review of Western officials’ behaviors in recent weeks and months indicate their lack of seriousness and sincerity when it comes to the talks in Vienna, Austria, to revive the 2015 nuclear deal and lift anti-Iran sanctions.
Following signature of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) by the US, the UK, France, Germany, Russia, China and Iran, observers were optimistic that the nuclear dispute between Tehran and the Western powers, but Iranians abide by their commitments under the deal while the Trump administration withdrew from the international accord in May 2018 and re-imposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic.
The European signatories to the deal proposed different mechanisms to keep up their end of bargain, but they have done nothing tangible to provide Iran with economic advantages of the agreement.
Iran waited for one year after the US withdrawal from the deal; then, Tehran decided to scale back its commitments. Washington imposed the so-called maximum pressure on Iranians to bring them to their knees, but such attempts bore no fruit for the West; so, the Western powers came to the conclusion that they should resume talks for revival of the JCPOA in Vienna.
Former US president Donald Trump wished to put pressure on the Islamic Republic to accept negotiations on Iranian non-nuclear issues such as its missile program and regional influence.
Iran and the P4+1 group of countries (Britain, France, Russia, China plus Germany) have kicked off the Joint Commission meetings of the JCPOA since March 2021. Former Iranian administration held six rounds of talks in Vienna. The administration of President Ebrahim Raisi determined new negotiating team, which proposed fresh suggestions on lifting of sanctions and revival of the deal.
Now, the Western states and their media outlets resort to propaganda campaign and set deadline to put pressure on Iranian negotiating team and public opinion.
Antony Blinken, United States Secretary of State, claimed that the time to reach an agreement is very short. Robert Malley, United States Special Representative for Iran, told CNN that the time left to revive the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran is running. Europeans also issued a statement to put pressure on Tehran over the timetable to reach a consensus. However, Iran has repeated that it is not a fan of long-term negotiations.
The Islamic Republic prioritizes resolving remained issues; so, setting deadline will not effective. Iranian top nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani noted that the talks can bear fruit if the other sides show seriousness and readiness to comply with their commitments.
