Japan Times said that according to “diplomatic sources”, Motegi is expected to hold talks with President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Sunday.
He is also planning to meet with Hossein Amir Abdollahian, a former Iranian deputy foreign minister who is set to succeed Zarif under the Raisi administration, the newspaper added.
In a note to IRNA, Motegi said that the relations between Tehran and Tokyo are friendly, old, and unchangeable.
Also, Iranian Embassy in Japan wrote in a Twitter message that the trip can open a new chapter for strengthening and expanding relations between Tehran and Tokyo.
Earlier, NKK television channel had said that Motegi was expected to urge Iranian officials to have a constructive role in deescalating tensions and creating stability in the Middle East.
He is also expected to announce Japan’s tendency to strengthen its traditional friendship with Iran.
Motegi and Iranian officials will probably discuss the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as well.
