Monsoon hits infrastructure in southeastern Iran

Zahedan, IRNA – Head of the Sistan and Baluchestan province’s Disaster Mitigation and Management Organization Majid Mohebi has said that heavy rainfall and storms in Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan have caused a spate of flash floods, dealing a heavy blow to the infrastructure of the southeastern province.

In an interview with IRNA on Saturday, Mohebi said that most of the damages were to the road and agriculture sector in southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province, especially Fanuj, Qasr-e Qand, Sarbaz and Nikshahr, and Mehrestan cities.

Due to the continuation of rainfall and the possibility of further damage, there are still damage assessment teams of the disaster headquarters in the region and are reviewing the situation, he added.

Recent monsoon rains in dozens of cities have led to the flooding of local rivers like the Kajou River in the south of the province and closed at least 42 roads of villages, he said, adding that efforts to reopen the routes are on the agenda.

He pointed out that Sistan and Baluchestan province due to its wide geographical position is always facing natural crises, including floods, drought, and massive storms.
