“The US decision to send cluster munitions to Ukraine shows Washington’s determination to drag and further complicate the war in Ukraine,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani wrote on his personal social media account on Sunday.
US national security adviser Jake Sullivan confirmed on Friday that Washington will send cluster munitions to Ukraine as part of a new military aid package.
“This is another example of America’s destabilizing actions,” Kanaani said, arguing that the arms export will “indiscriminately contribute to more bloodshed and destruction.”
Cluster munitions can fail to explode upon impact and, like landmines, pose grave risks to anyone who encounters them. Over 100 countries, including key US allies, have outlawed the controversial weapons under the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions.
