Iran turned sanctions into opportunity: President Raisi

Tehran, IRNA – Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran has managed for benefit from foreign sanctions by turning them into opportunities for increased economic activity in the country.

Raisi said on Monday after a meeting with visiting Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko that Tehran is ready to share its experiences on sanctions with Belarus, a country which is also subject to sanctions by the United States and allies in the West.

In a joint press conference with Lukashenko, Raisi said that Belarus and Iran enjoy some 30 years of relations which he said has been improved in the current Iranian administration.

He said both nations are determined to expand relations in all fields of interests although he insisted that the current state of trade and economic exchanges between the two countries is not comparable to the past.

Raisi further noted that Minsk and Tehran are against unilateralism and said that unity between the two can help defuse sanctions.

Raisi said Iran and Belarus had inked a series of good agreements on industrial, mining, trade, agricultural and transportation cooperation as he expressed hope that the documents will help boost bilateral ties.

Iran is determined to expand its regional and ultra-regional ties with Belarus, he said, adding that the two countries can engage in more cooperation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

For his part, Belarusian president said in the press conference that the volume of trade exchanges between Iran and Belarus tripled last year in comparison to 2021.

Lukashenko said, however, that the two nations enjoy higher capacities to improve their economic ties.

Lukashenko called for implementation of bilateral agreements between Iran and Belarus without paying attention to any external factor.

He said March 18, 2023 marks the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Iran and Belarus, adding that the occasion could be a good prelude to expanding the level of mutual ties between the two countries.

The Belarusian president expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome he has received in Tehran and invited Raisi to pay an official visit to Minsk in the future.
