Human rights situation deteriorated under Bin Salman: Saudi dissident

Tehran, IRNA – The situation of human rights in Saudi Arabia has deteriorated under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS) especially when it comes to the country’s minority Shia community, a Saudi opposition figure has said.

Hamza al-Shakhuri said in an exclusive interview with IRNA published on Tuesday that the Al Saud government and the Zionist regime are the two sides of the same coin, adding that the Saudi kingdom has committed different types of crimes, including torture, discrimination, illegal executions and sham trials against opponents in recent years.

Al Shakhuri said there is no such thing as an independent judiciary in Saudi Arabia, adding that all branches of the government in the country, including the judicial, legislative and executive systems have been directly controlled by the king and his princes since the regime was established in 1932.

He added that the Saudi crackdown on the dissent has also affected families of the opponents, including their wives, children, parents and even their siblings.

The activist noted that After King Salman and his son MbS took the helm of Saudi Arabia in 2015, the situation turned more dangerous and affected all regions, tribes and walks of life in the country.

The prosecution of dissidents is not a new story in Saudi Arabia, but the ruling family has ramped up the suppression of dissent to a level where someone can lose his/her life after twitting or re-twitting a post against the Al Saud, he said.

Al Shakhuri said that a female physician got three years of imprisonment due to re-twitting a post in support of Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement but he sentence was increased to 15 years after she launched an appeal.

According to the pundit, nearly 200 activists, dissidents and religious scholars have been executed in Saudi Arabia over the seven years.

He went on to say that international community cannot be fully trusted when it comes to defending human rights of people in oppressive systems, adding that world powers and arrogant states like the United States and others in Europe only care about their own interests.

As to the relationship between Al Saud and the Zionist regime, he said that the two have enjoyed good relations since they were set up by the British colonialists some decades ago.

He said that Britain created the two regimes with the aim of sowing discord among Arab and Muslim nations and to dominate them and to plunder their resources.

The so-called normalization projects involving certain Arab states and the Zionist regime could have not taken place without the consent of the Saudi authorities, he said.
