Reza Najafi, Iran's Foreign Ministry Deputy for Legal and International Affairs, addressed a seminar on the 30th anniversary of the ratification of the Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities in New York on Thursday.
In the conference, which was held in the presence of nearly 80 high-ranking representatives from different countries on the sidelines of the 77th UN General Assembly, Najafi declared that he was representing a country consisting of various cultures, religions, ethnicities, and languages, whose practitioners are living together in a peaceful manner based on tenets of Islam and other religions, so, Iranians apart from their languages and races, are a unified nation.
He further pointed to the efforts made in Iran to observe minorities’ rights, underlining that the United States’ cruel sanctions on Iranians are hampering the Iranians’ efforts in this respect.
According to the official, all people are the same in the face of legal regulations and they are entitled to be treated fairly and with respect; thus, any support for minorities should not overshadow the legitimate rights of member states and the principle of preventing intervention in internal affairs of countries should be observed.
