Iran says new Vienna talks to verify US seriousness to reach a deal

Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s top nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani said on Wednesday that the US' determination to reach an agreement over the JCPOA revival will be verified in the upcoming talks in Vienna.

Bagheri Kani made the comment at a meeting in Tehran with Pasquale Ferrara, the General Director for Political Affairs and International Security at the Italian Foreign Ministry.

The Iranian diplomat said that the Vienna negotiations are aimed at setting conditions for the US to return to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or the JCPOA.

Therefore, he added, Washington cannot set conditions for Iran which is a party to the accord.

In addition to the Iran deal, the two officials discussed relations between Tehran and Rome.

On Wednesday evening, Bagheri Kani, who is also the deputy foreign minister for political affairs, tweeted that he was heading to Vienna for a new round of talks over the revival of the JCPOA, which ran into trouble following the 2018 withdrawal of the US and its reimposition of sanctions on Iran.

The revival negotiations, which aim to remove the anti-Iran sanctions, have been stalled since April, with Iran saying that they await a political decision by the US.

Tehran also says that it is serious to reach a good, durable and strong agreement, and that, such an agreement is within reach if Washington acts realistically.
