President Raisi: Let's preserve Caspian Sea as region of peace, friendship

Tehran, IRNA – Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said that the littoral states should do their best to protect the Caspian Sea as a region of friendship and peace.

The president made the remarks addressing the sixth summit of Caspian Sea littoral states underway in Turkmenistan’s capital city of Ashgabat.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran considers the Caspian Sea as sea of friendship and peace and a factor for proximity among the regional people and voices its readiness for all-out cooperation based on mutual respect and reciprocal interests," the Iranian president said.

President Raisi expressed satisfaction that a good and constructive cooperation exists between the littoral countries in different transportation, trade, environmental and security areas, as well as on the fight against the regional sources of insecurity and crimes.

He said that a legal convention of the Caspian Sea which reflected the rights and obligations of the littoral states was finalized and signed in the last Caspian summit meeting in Aktau in 2018.

The president noted that the implementation of this convention could lead to further cooperation among the five littoral counties.

He also underlined the need for determining the seabed and sub-seabed borders of the Caspian Sea.

Referring to the ease of the COVID restrictions, the president said that the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to provide the Caspian Sea littoral states with transit access to Iranian southern ports of the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

He said that Iran and other Caspian Sea littoral states have recently reached agreements on exports of mining and agricultural products, and oil and gas and electricity swap as well which he believed are indicative of a new period of strategic cooperation.

At the end, the president expressed Iran's readiness to host the 7th Caspian Summit.
