Shalamcheh-Basra project to come on stream soon, after 18 years

Ahvaz, IRNA – Implementation of Shalamcheh-Basra railroad project in southwest Iran will start soon, after 18 years, the head of Iran-Iraq parliamentary friendship group announced on Sunday.

Implementation of the project will be a new chapter in deepening economic cooperation between Tehran and Baghdad, Mojtaba  Yousefi told IRNA.

Presently, no obstacles exist in the path of implementing the project, he underlined.

About Shalamcheh-Basra railroad project, the former Iranian president Hassan Rouhani once said that this would be a big development and the project will actually connect Iran to the Mediterranean Sea via Iraq to Syria and .

Speaking about the upcoming Arbaeen ritual, Yousefi said 60,000 Iranian pilgrims would attend the ceremony through air transport.

Arbaeen which falls on September 28 this year is a mourning ritual observed by Shia Muslims worldwide marking the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) (the third Shia Imam and the grandson of Prophet Mohammad [PBUH]).

Elsewhere in his remarks, the official talked of trade exchange between the two neighboring countries and said it is possible for export of technical and engineering services to Iraq to go up to 50 billion dollars a year.

Such export is the one that can bring good job opportunities, he added.

The official expressed dissatisfaction to banking affairs between the two countries, underlining that there is no Iranian bank active in Iraq to be able to launch a bank guarantee for Iranian traders in the neighboring country to facilitate economic activities.

If the branch is launched, many trade obstacles will be removed, he noted.

Referring to the latest visit of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi to Iran, the official said the two sides reached agreement on many issues, one of which was development of economic relations.

Iran has the capacity of having 190 billion dollars of trade and investment cooperation per year with Iraq while the figure is 12.5 billion dollars at the present, he stressed.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi heading a political and economic delegation arrived in Tehran September 12 to confer with Iranian officials.
