Pakistan army says 58% of fence along Iran border completed

Islamabad, Aug 27, IRNA -- Spokesman for Pakistan Army says his country is determined to guard its international borders with its neighbors as situation in Afghanistan evolves adding that 58 percent of fencing work on border with Iran has been completed.

Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Major General Babar Iftikhar during a press briefing at Army headquarters in Rawalpindi on Friday spoke about situation in Afghanistan, US military withdrawal, tensions on Pakistan’s western border with Afghanistan and dealing with terrorist elements along the border

The purpose of the briefing was to explain Pakistan Army’s point of view on evolving situation in region especially reference to Afghanistan, its implications for Pakistan’s national security and measures in place and underway to ensure internal security and stability along the borders.

"The situation on the western border with Afghanistan is calm, although there is no doubt that any situation in Afghanistan directly affects Pakistan, but the Pakistani Armed Forces are ready for any situation," Pakistani military spokesman said.

He stressed: Peace is established on our common borders in the west and southwest, and at the same time, the fencing work of border continues with full force.

Major General Babar Iftikhar said 58% of the fencing of border with Iran has been completed and the construction of dozens of border posts is underway.

"We are closely monitoring the situation in Afghanistan, civilian government consultations are underway with countries in the region, and we urge the international community to be aware of the negative actions of some parties in the region to undermine peace efforts in Afghanistan," the senior Pakistani military official added.

He said: Pakistan supports peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan in accordance with the will and aspirations of the people of this country and supports any choice of Afghans.
