Pakistan welcomes Iran's initiative to advance Afghan peace process

Islamabad, IRNA -- Pakistan on Friday welcomed the holding of a peace meeting in Tehran with the participation of Afghan groups, including Taliban, and the role of the Islamic Republic of Iran in advancing the peace process.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri in a statement said that Pakistan considers the role of Iran in the Afghan peace process important. "Iran, like Pakistan, is a neighboring country of Afghanistan and host to millions of Afghan refugees."

“Pakistan welcomes Iran’s engagement with Afghan parties to achieve a negotiated political settlement,” he said.

He added that "we hope that the Afghan parties would seize the opportunity and achieve an inclusive, broad-based and comprehensive political settlement".

The intra-Afghan dialogue summit was hosted by the Islamic Republic of Iran on Wednesday and Thursday this week with the participation of representatives of the Afghan government, senior figures and the Taliban High Political Committee.

It is worth mentioning that the delegation of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan was led by former Foreign Minister Younis Qanuni and the head of the Taliban delegation was Abbas Stanikzai, the deputy head of the group's office.

Meanwhile Pakistan’s Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs in a meeting today reviewed the ongoing developments in Afghanistan while terming intra-Afghan dialogue in Tehran as important and praised the role of Islamic Republic of Iran in promoting peace and stability in the country.
