Hoping for happy ending of Vienna talks

Tehran, May 30, IRNA - A political analyst believes that the Joint Commission meetings in Vienna, Austria, are in line with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's pledges for lifting of sanctions and nullifying the so-called maximum pressure campaign against the Islamic Republic.

Hassan Beheshtipour, a top expert in foreign policy affairs, told IRNA on Sunday that the time is ripe for creating a more converging policy inside the country in a bid to pave the way for accomplishing the Vienna talks over the revival of the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement.

President Rouhani promised to hand over his administration to the next government free from sanctions, and that all signs show that the Vienna talks is bearing fruit and the United States' pressures and sanctions on Iran is doomed to fail; so, no one speaks about the failed campaign, because the sanction policy is a complete failure in dealing with the Iranian nation.

The president underlined that the Iranian people's resistance in the face of economic war has created a unique scene in the country's history.

President Rouhani also emphasized that Tehran negotiates in Vienna more powerfully than before, which means that the complete failure of the so-called maximum pressure; therefore, if the Americans follow up a sincere attitude, the negotiations on revival of Iran's nuclear deal will come to an end in a short period.

Lifting of sanctions first necessity for Iran

Beheshtipour said that the current Iranian administration has pursued two main measures in the last eight years to get rid of sanctions. The first effort happened when the government tried to remove bans imposed by the UN Security Council, he noted, adding that the strides bore fruit and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was signed in 2015. The second effort is the ongoing Vienna talks.

Unfortunately, the Trump administration withdrew from the deal in May 2018 and re-imposed sanctions on Iran, the analyst said, noting that the Iranian government tried to lift the embargo, but then US administration was not a reliable partner to be negotiated and reach a logical agreement; thus, the Iranian side stood against the sanction policy.

Now, with a new administration in the White House, Iran is following up the strategy of lifting sanctions and enhancing the JCPOA through initiating negotiations in Vienna, he argued.

Iranian and other negotiating teams in Vienna emphasized that the talks have reached good conclusions, the expert said, adding that the initiation of the talks helped reduce effectiveness of anti-Iran sanctions.
