'We have tried to make the [European] countries understand that Iran's regional influence, of which the US and Zionist regime are speaking, is a natural and spiritual one that is not tied on any step taken by us,' Bahram Qasemi said in reaction to the claims by the Arab daily Asharq Al-Awsat that Europe had put forth some conditions for talks with Iran.
'Iran's influence is in fact rooted in our history and civilization, and cannot be degraded upon the request of a few countries,' he said.
Noting that some differences between Iran and Europe are matters of taste, the spokesman added, 'European countries definitely know that we will not take conditions, and do not ask for permissions from others in our policy making.'
Asharq Al-Awsat reported on March 3 that France, Britain, Germany and Italy, known as E4, have asked Iran to modify its policies on four Middle East countries namely Iraq, Yemen, Syria and Lebanon.
Qasemi rejected the report as untrue.
