Renegotiating JCPOA 'impossible': Iranian vice-president to CNN

Tehran, Oct 17, IRNA – Vice President for Economic Affairs Mohammad Nahavandian on Monday reiterated that renegotiating the 2015 nuclear deal is impossible, because no party will take part in such talks.

In an interview with CNN from Tehran, Nahavandian, referred to US President Donald Trump’s refusal to recertify JCPOA, saying that Trump as a new president 'lost an opportunity to start a new constructive initiative towards Iran.'

'He repeated a very negative rhetoric towards Iran and the Iranian people which has angered everybody,' Nahavandian said referring to Trump's anti-Iranian speech on October 13 during which he outlined the new strategy of his administration towards Iran by leveling allegations against the country and its Islamic Revolution Guards Crops (IRGC).

'This kind of language would not help, did not help,' noted the official.

Condemning Trump administration’s attitude towards the IRGC, Nahavandian said that Trump’s speech united the Iranian nation and politicians.

Such statements are 'detrimental and unhelpful,' he went to say.

Trump's words made the Iranian nation furious, he said, noting that the US president's stance regarding the landmark nuclear deal also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is in contrast to those of other parties.

Rejecting renegotiating JCPOA as impossible, Nahavandian said that any issue can be discussed by the counties but JCPOA is non-negotiable.

Underlining that missile program was not part of JCPOA, he said, 'If there is a concern over regional or international issues, they can serve as a topic for discussion among Iran and regional states or Europe.'

Nahavandian recalled that Iran played a role in fighting Daesh and terrorism and 'its part cannot be overlooked.'

Despite the fact that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has so far verified Iran compliance with the deal for eight times, hawkish US president laid a new strategy regarding Tehran, decertifying Iran’s abidance by the deal.

Trump new approach drew severe objection from many countries, international institutes and officials.

EU foreign policy chief, Mogherini in a decisive reaction to Trump said that JCPOA is not a bilateral deal and belongs to no country and no president can terminate it.

Global community cannot accept to kill a deal which is working, she said, reaffirming Iran’s compliance with the terms of the deal.
