Iran rejects Russia's Itar-Tass news about shipping canal

Moscow, April 9, IRNA – Iran's Embassy in Russia dismissed a report by Russian news agency Itar-Tass that Tehran and Moscow have held talks on creating a shipping canal.

On Friday, Itar-Tass has falsely quoted Iran's Ambassador to Moscow Mehdi Sanaei saying that Iran and Russia are to create a shipping canal from the Caspian Sea in north of Iran to the Persian Gulf in the south.

Being the world's largest lake, the Caspian Sea is located between Europe and Asia. It is bounded on the northeast by Kazakhstan, on the northwest by Russia, on the west by Azerbaijan, on the south by Iran, and on the southeast by Turkmenistan.

The Embassy said the news was false, adding the truth is that Sanaei was addressing at the St. Petersburg State University while a university student asked about creation of such a canal by Iran, and the Iranian ambassador replied the issue was being reviewed.

So, the Embassy added, there was no question of Tehran-Moscow cooperation in that area.

Itar-Tass has emended its remarks about the issue.
