The announcement was made in an audio file uploaded to Boko Haram’s twitter account, purportedly belonging to the group’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, monitoring group SITE reported on Saturday.
'We announce our allegiance to the Caliph ... and will hear and obey in times of difficulty and prosperity,' Boko Haram was quoted as saying.
The ISIL terrorists have declared formation of a so-called Islamic caliphate or state in northern Iraq to rule the territories under their control in the crisis-hit country and the neighboring Syria.
The eight-minute recording was accompanied with an image of a radio microphone along with Arabic, French, and English subtitles.
Unlike most of Boko Haram’s messages, this time Shekau is not seen.
Boko Haram, whose name means “Western education is forbidden,” controls parts of northeastern Nigeria and says its goal is to overthrow the Nigerian government.
It has claimed responsibility for a number of deadly shooting attacks and bombings in various parts of Nigeria since the beginning of its activities in 2009, which have left over 13,000 people dead and 1.5 million displaced.
Boko Haram has also conducted military operations in Nigeria’s neighboring countries Cameroon, Chad, and Niger.
