Crackdown on freedom of speech exposes US on rights claims

Tehran, IRNA- US police detained dozens of more students during a fresh protest on Monday against the Zionist regime's crimes in Gaza and in support of Palestine at Columbia University in New York.

The new protest took place hours after Columbia University officials canceled classes to reduce tensions and decided to hold them virtually, IRNA cited media reports.

The decision was made to reduce tension and give us all a chance to consider next steps, the president of Columbia University said in a statement.

Columbia, one of the most prestigious universities in the United States, has emerged as a center for student activism since Israel launched its genocidal war on Gaza more than six months ago.

Several students involved in the protest last week were suspended from the university and its associate institution, Barnard College. They include Isra Hirsi, who is the daughter of Ilhan Omar, a Democrat in the United States House of Representatives, Al Jazeera reported on Friday.

In response to Israel's war on Gaza, demonstrations have held in American universities, including Yale, Columbia and others across the country, often turning violent amid police crackdown.

According to IRNA, the arrest of Palestinian supporters is carried out while the United States presents itself as a champion of freedom of expression in the world and selectively blames and sanctions other countries on the issue.

On Monday morning local time, the Yale Daily newspaper reported that at Yale University, at least 16 people - including some students - were arrested by the police who also blocked the entrances to the university.

"Pro-Palestinian protesters have been camping in front of Bank Plaza, which is the university's newspaper, for three days, demanding that Yale University not support manufacturers of military weapons for Israel," report said.

According to reports, Yale Daily News reporters were also threatened with arrest if they did not leave the premises.

Tensions have risen in many American universities since the war on Gaza, with American authorities cracking down on students under the false narratives of anti-Semitism.
