Zoroastrians in Kerman not to celebrate Sadeh feast to sympathize with martyrs’ families

Kerman, IRNA – Zoroastrians have decided not to celebrate the Sadeh feast – an ancient mid-winter festival – to express sympathy with the families of those who were killed in the recent terrorist explosions in Kerman, southern Iran.

The news was announced by the chairman of Kerman Zoroastrians community Sirous Niknam through a statement, IRNA reported on Wednesday.

In the statement, Niknam re-extended condolences to the families of the martyrs of the January 3 Kerman terrorist attacks.

Sadeh is annually celebrated by the Zoroastrian communities around January 30.

Four years ago, the Sadeh festival was added to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) intangible cultural heritage list.

Celebrated 50 days before the Iranian New Year (Nowruz), Sadeh is one of the oldest cultural ceremonies. The festivity honors the sacred elements of fire, water, wind, and soil to defeat the forces of darkness, frost, and cold.
