Iraq to fully enforce security pact with Iran: Amirabdollahian

Tehran, IRNA- Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has said Iraq will fully execute a security agreement with Iran in the coming days to ensure terrorist groups in the border areas pose no threat to the Islamic Republic.

“Iraq will fully execute the provisions of the security agreement in the coming days,” Amirabdollahian said at a joint press conference with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein in Tehran on Wednesday.

He stressed that the Islamic Republic is committed to the security of the country, expressing satisfaction with the progress made by Iraq in removing terrorists from areas close to the border with Iran.

The top diplomat said the central government in Baghdad and authorities in the Kurdistan region are cooperating to address the security threat along the border and are committed to implementing the security pact signed in March with Iran.

“Efforts are underway to disarm the terrorists and fully implement the provisions of the security agreement between the two countries,” he added.

Hussein arrived in the Iranian capital on Wednesday morning at the head of a delegation.

During a meeting earlier in the day, the two foreign ministers discussed bilateral relations as well as regional developments and the need to implement the joint security agreement that was signed in Tehran in March.

Addressing reporters, Hussein expressed his gratitude to Iran for its clear stance in support of the Iraqi people.

He maintained that the Iraqi constitution prohibits any group from using Iraqi territory to launch attacks on other nations, adding that security cooperation between Tehran and Baghdad is in line with the Iraqi constitution.

Terrorist groups in the Iraqi Kurdistan region ramped up their activities against the Islamic Republic last year.

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) responded by launching several rounds of airstrikes against their positions.

Iranian military leaders warned that the airstrikes would resume if Baghdad failed to disarm the terrorists by a deadline in September.

“We are working to disarm these groups and relocate them to facilities under the supervision of the United Nations,” the Iraqi foreign minister said at the press conference.

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly warned it will give a decisive response if Iraqi territory along the border with Iran becomes a hub of terrorist activities against the country.
