Iran’s fertility rate rises after 30 years

Tehran, IRNA - The total fertility rate in Iran has increased for the first time in three decades, chairman of the Joint Commission for Youth Affairs and Family Support of the Iranian Parliament has announced.

“Over the past 30 years, the fertility rate has been declining annually. However, this year marks the first time we have observed an upward trend, with the rate rising from 1.65 to 1.66,” Amirhossein Bankipourfard said on Saturday.

“The latest statistics indicate that after 30 years of declining birth rates for third and fourth children in the country, we are now witnessing an increase in the number of births for these children,” the lawmaker added,

Furthermore, Bankipourfard highlighted an increase in the birth rate among the age groups of 35 to 40 and 40 to 50 years.

These two age groups are crucial as they gradually transit from the childbearing age bracket.

“While the number of births had been decreasing by approximately 500,000 over the past six years, this year we have only seen a reduction of about 20,000,” he noted.

The increase in the fertility rate in Iran signifies years of efforts to reverse the declining birth rate, raising hopes for potential population growth and easing socioeconomic concerns associated with the downward trend.
