Iran-Iraq security pact facilitates cooperation: SNSC chief

Tehran, IRNA - The newly-appointed secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) says that a recent security pact signed between Iran and Iraq is the result of months negotiations and joint efforts as well as a roadmap for establishing stable security at the borders between the two countries.

Ali Akbar Ahmadian made the remarks in a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart Qassim al-Araji in Tehran on Monday.

Ahmadian described religious and civilizational commonalities between Iran and Iraq as a guarantee for maintaining deep relations.

He stressed the fact that the Islamic Republic of Iran has always supported governments who have come into office based on people’s determination.

We expect the Iraqi government to guarantee the security of the common borders with Iran as soon as possible as it is stipulated in the security pact by ending the presence of anti-Iranian elements in Iraq, he said in the meeting.

Meanwhile, al-Araji said that the Iraqi government and its national security body are determined to interact with Iran in all fields.

He emphasized Iraq’s commitment to the recent security agreement signed with Iran.
