Brigadier Gholamreza Jafari said on Sunday that the operation to release the hostages was launched in response to the letter from the Interpol police organization and a statement from the embassy of one of the neighboring countries.
Jafari said the two foreign nationals are aged 65 and 70 and have been in Iran on a tourist trip, adding that the pair had been abducted in Bandar Abbas, the capital of Hormozgan province.
The local police chief said two hostage-takers were arrested in their hideouts during the operation which he said ended in the safe release of the foreign tourists.
