Muslims from different Islamic countries came together at the Islamic Center in New York to commemorate the anniversary of the great sacrifices made by Imam Hussein (PBUH) and his entourage in Karbala, Iraq, on October 10, 680.
Muslims from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Iran hold mourning rituals at the Islamic Center of New York and other Islamic centers throughout the United States since the onset of holy Islamic month of Muharram.
Mohammad Eslami, chairman of the New York Islamic Center, said that the mourning rituals to commemorate the Imam and his entourage is being held at the center while observing health protocols, because the world has been facing the fatal COVID-10 pandemic since last year.
American Muslims also hold mourning ceremonies virtually, he said, noting that those, who cannot participate in the procedure at mosques and Islamic centers, will be able to mark the event.
On Sunday, Muslims residing in New York also held a ceremony called "The Day of Hussein" in Manhattan to commemorate Imam Hussein's martyrdom anniversary.
Prior to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Muslims held mourning ceremonies in Washington, California and New York each year to mark the Karbala event.
