In a meeting with the Secretary General of the Council of Ministers of Iraq Hamid Naim Al-Ghazi, Iran’s Ambassador to Baghdad Iraj Masjedi asked the Iraqi side to complete the railway connection project, underlining that Iran has done all preparations for the project.
Iraq’s Council of Ministers agreed earlier this year to connect the country’s railway to that of Iran through Basra-Shalamcheh corridor.
Iran’s part of the railway connection with 17 kilometers length was constructed in 2011, but the 32-kilometer part of Iraqi side has yet to be implemented by Iraq’s government.
The connection makes it easier for Iranians to visit religious cities in Iraq and facilitates transit transportation.
Iran’s Ambassador also asked the Iraqi side to make it possible for Iranians to take pilgrimage to the Holy Shrine of Imam Hossein (PBUH) during the Arbaeen days.
