Supreme Leader, president offer condolences on death of senior cleric

Tehran, IRNA - Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and President Ebrahim Raisi in separate messages offered condolences on the demise of Ayatollah Mohammad Emami Kashani, one of Iran’s senior clerics.

In his message, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei appreciated Ayatollah Kashani's endeavors before and after the Islamic Revolution.

He condoled with the bereaved family of the senior cleric as well as his students.

Meanwhile, President Raisi in a message said that the pious cleric, who was one of the followers of the Imam Khomeini movement after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, had an influential presence in important political and cultural bodies, including Friday prayers in Tehran, the Assembly of Experts for Leadership, the Iranian Parliament, the Guardian Council, and the Expediency Discernment Council, and spent his honorable life defending the ideals of the Islamic Revolution and serving the Islamic system and the people.

Reports suggest that Ayatollah Kashani died of a heart attack, late on Saturday.

Born on the 3rd of October 1931, Ayatollah Kashani was an interim leader of Tehran Friday Prayers and served as a member of the Assembly of Experts, a key deliberative body tasked with supervising and electing the country’s Supreme Leader.

The senior cleric was also the head of Shahid Motahari University in Tehran and performed various seminary roles after the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
