Confronting terrorists at Iran-Iraq borders requires joint cooperation: Raisi

Tehran, IRNA – Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has said that confronting terrorist and separatist groups in border areas between Iran and Iraq requires the two countries to have interaction and play their part.

Raisi made the comment on Saturday during talks with his Iraqi counterpart Abdul Latif Rashid on the sidelines of the 7th Summit of the Heads of State of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Algiers, Algeria.

The Iranian president emphasized the need for the full implementation of a security agreement that Tehran and Baghdad signed in 2023, which calls on Iraq to disarm terrorist and separatist groups and prevent their activity at the border with Iran.

He referred to the good neighborliness of the Iraqi nation, especially people of the country’s northern Kurdistan region with the Iranian nation, and warned against the Zionist regime’s plot to harm these ties.

He added that Iran considers the security of Iraq as its own security, noting that the two sides should make efforts to further deepen their cooperation to disappoint their enemies.

Raisi spoke about the Palestinian issue as well, and criticized inaction by certain Arab and Islamic countries on that issue. He said that cutting economic and trade relations with the Zionist regime is a practical way to bring an end to its atrocities against the Palestinian people.

The Iraqi president, on his part, said that Iran-Iraq relations are beyond geographical borders and are rooted in cultural and religious beliefs of the two nations.

He said that Iraq will never forget the support Iran extended to it at critical and historical junctures, stressing that the Baghdad government will never allow any smallest act of violation to take place against Iranian territory from Iraqi soil.

Abdul Latif Rashid also said that Iran and Iraq share a common view on the Palestinian issue, and praised the Islamic Republic of Iran for its courageous stance towards that issue as well as Gaza.

He added that security will not be stabilized in West Asia as long as a criminal and aggressive regime like the Zionist regime is present in the region.
