Iran deputy minister meets UNESCO World Heritage Center chief in Riyadh

Tehran, IRNA – Iran's Deputy Minister of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Ali Darabi has met with Director of UNESCO World Heritage Center Lazare Eloundou Assomo in the Saudi capital Riyadh.

The two officials met on Thursday on the sidelines of the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee, which is being held in Riyadh on September 10-25.

They discussed cooperation between Iran and UNESCO World Heritage, with Assomo emphasizing the importance of Iran’s position in global heritage.

Darabi also referred to problems in the way of issuing visas for some members of the Iranian delegation, who were due to take part in the ongoing event in Saudi Arabia. He called on UNESCO World Heritage Center to resolve the issue.

In response, the UNESCO official said that similar problems have happened to delegates from other countries as well, adding that his center is in negotiations with the Saudi government to resolve the issue.

Also on the sidelines of the World Heritage Committee’s session, the Iranian deputy minister met with Rakan Altouq, the general supervisor of culture affairs and international relations at the Saudi Ministry of Culture.

The two discussed ways of expanding cooperation between their countries in cultural and tourism fields.

The Iranian official also invited Saudi Arabia to join his country in its proposed case for the global registration of Iftar as intangible heritage.

Iftar is a meal Muslims eat to end fasting each day during the month of Ramadan.
