“We believe that the current century belongs to Asia. The Islamic Republic of Iran and South Korea are considered two important players on this continent, and we have great respect for the long-running and friendly ties between the two countries,” Amirabdollahian said in a phone conversation with his South Korean counterpart Park Jin on Monday night, adding that Asia is a top priority of the Raisi administration’s foreign policy agenda.
The top Iranian diplomat referred to the recent unblocking of his country’s assets in South Korea due to US sanctions, saying that Tehran and Seoul can now make steps towards a new chapter of their bilateral ties.
He also said that the Islamic Republic welcomes any initiative which helps promote relations between the two countries.
The South Korean foreign minister, on his part, called the unblocking of Iranian funds a sign of Seoul’s commitment towards the Iranian government and people.
He also described the recent developments in Tehran-Seoul relations as positive and meaningful, noting that his country is ready to boost those relations.
Park Jin also announced South Korea’s readiness to have cooperation with Iran on promoting peace and stability in the Middle East, given that his country will become a member of the UN Security Council within the next two years.
The two ministers hailed more than six decades of diplomatic relations between their countries, saying that it serves as a key backing to the development of ties and needs to be protected.
They discussed international developments and environmental issues as well.
