UN coordinator calls for punishment after Palestinian toddler is killed

Tehran, IRNA – The UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland has called for punishment for those responsible for the killing of the two-year-old Palestinian child Mohammad Haytham Tamimi.

“I condemn and am deeply saddened by the death of a 2-year-old Palestinian boy, who was critically injured by Israeli security forces’ gunfire in Al-Nabi Saleh two days ago,” Wennesland wrote on his Twitter account on Monday while calling "for those responsible to be held to account".

“Civilians, particularly children, continue to bear the brunt of this conflict,” he added, while referring to the continued clashes between the Palestinians and the Israeli regime forces in the occupied territories.

Two-and-a-half-year-old Tamimi was shot in the head on Thursday near Ramallah as he and his father, Haytam Tamimi, were sitting in their parked car outside their home.

They were transferred to a hospital with critical injuries.

Mohammad remained on life support until he was pronounced dead on Monday morning.

The Israeli military claimed that its troops had mistaken the Palestinian toddler and his father for Palestinian fighters.

A total of 28 children have been shot and killed by Zionist soldiers since the beginning of 2023, including seven in the Gaza Strip.
