Iran condemns anti-Iranian provisions of US 2023 NDAA

Tehran, IRNA – Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani has condemned the anti-Iranian provisions of the United States 2023 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) by saying that some baseless claims raised in the document regarding the regional activities of the Islamic Republic of Iran are in line with the destructive and destabilizing role of the US in the Persian Gulf and West Asia regions.

“Some of the anti-Iranian provisions included in the US 2023 NDAA reflect the continuation of the hostile, provocative and interventionist beliefs and policies of the United States and are meant to promote the Iranophobia campaign and to create an atmosphere of security (threats) against the Islamic Republic of Iran,” said Kanaani on Friday.

He said that the false accusations included in the document about Iran's peaceful nuclear activities have come despite the fact that the US government has violated international conventions and laws by unilaterally withdrawing from an international deal on Iran’s nuclear program, known as the JCPOA, in 2018.

The official added that it was the Islamic Republic of Iran that helped preserve the JCPOA with initiatives and diplomatic flexibility despite being unable to enjoy its full rights within the framework of the deal.

Kanaani added in his remarks that the bilateral cooperation between Iran and other governments, including on conventional defense programs, comply with international laws and obligations and are aimed at protecting the shared interests of partner countries and are not directed at third parties.

“The US itself has been involved in (weapons) sales and military and defense cooperation contracts in the region more than any other country and it has exacerbated the risks to regional peace and stability by setting up numerous military bases in the region,” said the official.

He said that that the Islamic Republic of Iran has repeatedly stated that the development of nuclear weapons has no place in Iran's military doctrine, adding that as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency and a signatory to the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement (CSA), Iran is well aware of its rights and obligations.

“With no doubt, making baseless claims about the peaceful nuclear activities of the Islamic Republic of Iran does not help efforts to legitimize the illegal and unilateral moves and sanctions of the United States against the Islamic Republic of Iran and Iran has proven that it will not submit to the logic of bullying,” said the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman.
