IAEA-AEOI joint statement to outline next steps: Grossi

Vienna, IRNA - Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi has underlined that a joint statement by the UN nuclear watchdog and the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) will outline future steps for cooperation.

Upon his arrival in Vienna, Austria, Grossi addressed correspondents describing his negotiations with Iranian officials in Tehran as positive.
The IAEA director general met with President of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Mohammad Eslami as well as Minister of Foreign Affairs Hossein Amirabdollahian on Saturday.
The intensive consultations led to issuing a joint statement on speeding up and enhancing cooperation and dialogues between the IAEA and Iran in order to resolve outstanding issues.
Grossi stated that he expects to present a conclusion to the Board of Governors of the IAEA by June.
Emphasizing the fact that safeguards issues cannot be solved politically, he said that the IAEA does not have any question on the allegation of finding atomic particles in a place in Iran; so, there is no need to initiate a new process.
Asked about the impact of Iran-IAEA differences on return to the JCPOA, he answered that his own perceptions are irrelevant with the Vienna talks.
He also said that the issue of a closing alleged case of the JCPOA depends on representatives in the Vienna talks and that IAEA director general cannot comment on the issue.
On the current safeguards monitoring activity in Iran, Grossi said, "This is contingent to the negotiations on the return to the JCPOA, we did not discuss it this time because we are continuing with this interim sort of arrangement we have."
He stressed that the IAEA and the Islamic Republic go ahead with their collaborations, noting that "our activities are continuing, they are uninterrupted within the format that has been agreed with Iran."
However, the IAEA chief reminded that Iranians will keep data of their nuclear facilities until their return to the JCPOA.
Grossi also stated that the joint states have frankly put forward issues in order to provide both sides with reaching consensus.
Iran has promised to cooperate with the IAEA and the organization is tasked with preparing a conclusion, which can be finalized or incomplete, he said.
In the fourth place, he said what the IAEA seeks is not in that place and Iran is not able to prove or disprove the existence of atomic particles in the place; so, there is no need to continue following up the matter.
The IAEA has raised questions in the consultations and both sides have reached a consensus to set a bounding timeline; so, Iranians should submit their first response by March 20, he added.
As to moving centrifuge production facility from Karaj to Isfahan, he said that the IAEA is well aware of the site and inspectors have visited it, and that they installed cameras at Isfahan facility; although data are being captured, the IAEA does not have access to them until the revival of the JCPAO.

Grossi arrived in Tehran Friday night to resolve issues regarding the safeguards agreement.

Upon his arrival, he was welcomed by the spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Behrouz Kamalvandi.

During his stay in Tehran, Grossi conferred with a number of Iranian officials on the continuation of cooperation between Iran and the IAEA.

He took on Twitter today, writing "Today I signed a statement with Vice-President and President of the Atomic Energy Organization of #Iran 🇮🇷, Mohammad Eslami. A lot of work ahead of us."
