Europe should try to move talks with Iran forward: Ex-spox

Tehran, IRNA – Former speaker for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised Europeans to move talks with Iran forward as an independent entity instead of obeying the US, as they pay the highest cost for the war in Ukraine because of gas price increase.

In an interview with IRNA’s foreign policy correspondent on Thursday, Ramin Mehmanparast said that the public opinion in the US expects a positive measure on the nuclear deal with Iran, but Republicans and some Democrat politicians oppose the idea.

That’s why Joe Biden’s administration should conclude the case ASAP, or the domestic political pressure on Democrats might rise in the future, he noted.

To not reach an agreement with Iran or to oppose Iran’s demands by Western parties is supported by no logic, Mehmanparast said, adding that Iran had put limitations on its nuclear program in return of reciprocal commitments which Europe and the US never fulfilled and Washington even pulled out of the deal.

Iran and three European countries, France, Germany and the UK, as well as China and Russia, are holding talks in Vienna, Austria, for a possible return of the US to the 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Mehmanparast, who has also served as ambassador to Poland, said that the US should make its final decision, as nothing can acknowledge their current logic.

The US should remove sanctions imposed on Iran and show real intention to fulfil their commitments, he continued.

Iran, in turn, has announced that it would immediately return to the limitations set by the JCPOA, he went on to say.

The former Iranian ambassador to Kazakhstan also said that the concurrence of the war in Ukraine and Vienna talks would double the pressure on Europeans and that is caused by the sanctions they slap on Russia which will have intensive impact on Europe’s gas and oil.

If Russia’s gas stops entering Europe for any reason, Iran’s gas could be a proper alternative that can save Europeans from a critical crisis, Mehmanparast opined.

But this is possible if the talks in Vienna reach a final agreement and the sanctions against Iran are removed, allowing for practical use of Iran’s capacity, he added.
