Iran first in combating desertification, dust

Tehran, IRNA - The head of Department of Environment of Iran said on Wednesday that Iran was in the first place in containing desertification and dust in the global scale.

In a meeting with Iraq’s Environment Minister Jassim Abdul Aziz al-Falahi on the sidelines of the Fifth United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) in Nairobi on Wednesday, Ali Salajegheh expressed readiness to work with Iraq on environmental issues.

He mentioned the changes in the sources of the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers that has caused environmental problems for Iran, Iraq, and Syria, noting that there was no clear resolution for such problems in the international law.

The official highlighted Iran’s will to cooperate with Iraq to contain the areas that cause emission of dust, mentioning the projects Iran has done in Iraqi cities of Shalamcheh, Basra, and Karbala.

The Iraqi minister, in turn, said that his country could cooperate with Iran on solar panel production, biodiversity, soil stabilization, and waste management.

He called on Iran to help the people of Iraq’s southern areas, as the water security has turned to a humanitarian issues in that region.
