Raisi's visit to Russia to open new chapter in mutual ties

Tehran, IRNA - Given the fact that Russia and Iran enjoy broad capacities to expand bilateral relations, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's imminent trip to Moscow can open a new chapter in developing bilateral strategic cooperation, an expert in international affairs believes.

Mohsen Pakaein, former Iranian ambassador and analyst in international affairs, told IRNA on Tuesday that the visit to Moscow indicates that the new administration in Tehran attaches great important to Look to East Policy and future of relationship with Russia.

The former deputy foreign minister went on to say that the Look to East Policy translates into strengthening ties with countries that are in the same front against unilateralism; these states are not geographically close to Iran, they are located in different parts of the globe, from Latin America to Africa and other parts of the world.

Sometimes, certain observers say that the Look to East Policy can be translated into returning to the Cold War era, but in fact that era came to an end, and the policy's meaning for Iran is that the Islamic Republic seeks to diversify its friends and prevents from relying on the West, Pakaein mentioned, noting that there would be enough place for expansion of ties if the Western powers relinquish hostility towards Iran.

The Iranian ambassador to Zambia, Uzbekistan, Thailand, and Azerbaijan Republic also said that the Raisi administration has distanced itself from tactical approach and is keen to create strategic partnership, when it comes to relationship with Eastern states.

The art of diplomacy teaches politicians that they should identify common interests and objectives in order to utilize capacities of all countries in line with their own country's national interests, he argued.

The relations between Russia and Iran is of utmost significance, the analyst said, adding that the Russian Federation is one of the biggest neighbors of the Islamic Republic, which is a veto-wielding power at the United Nations Security Council.

Moscow and Tehran enjoy abundant commonalities in regional and international affairs, he said, emphasizing that the two neighbors have joint viewpoints on regional security as well as fight against terrorism and drug trafficking.

The United States' sanction policy has inflicted heavy toll on both friend countries' economies, so it is natural for Russia and Iran to seek to enhance their economic sector through cooperation in trade, transit, energy, and tourism.

Pakaein concluded that President Raisi's visit to Moscow can pave the ground for opening a new chapter in Russia-Iran ties.
