Yalda Night celebrated in Japan

Tehran, IRNA – Office of Iran's Cultural Attaché in Tokyo held an online ceremony on Tuesday night to celebrate Yalda Night, with many Japanese attending the event.

 Over 100 Iranian and Japanese, including several Persian learning Japanese students, attended the online celebration entitled "A Night with Iranians".

Three Japanese Persian learning students recited verses from the 14th-century Persian poet Hafez, as it is common in Iranian traditions of Yalda Night.

Iran's Cultural Attaché in Tokyo Hossein Divsalar gave a description of Iranian traditions and customs practiced in Yalda Night which coincides with the northern hemisphere's winter solstice and is the longest and darkest night of the year.

Iranians gather together on this night, practicing several traditions and waiting for the longest night to give way to the bright light of the morning sun of the first day of winter.

Kobe University professor Dr. Masato Tani who is a master of Iranian music offered his experiences on celebrating Yalda Night in Iran and his encounter with Iranian people on this occasion.

Dr. Masato is a skilled player of the hammered-dulcimer-like Iranian instrument Santur.
