Russian general urges need to prioritize military relations with Iran

Moscow, IRNA – Chief of the Russian General Staff General Valery Gerasimov said on Monday that military cooperation between Iran and Russia has to be put high on the agenda of both countries.

Gerasimov made the remarks during a meeting in Moscow with his Iranian counterpart Major General Mohammad Baqeri.

Noting that Iran is a key ally of Russia, the Russian general said that bilateral talks between the two countries are underway.

He said that today is a special chance for him and the Iranian chief of staff of the armed forces to discuss a wide range of bilateral, regional, and international issues.

General Baqeri, for his part, appreciated the support of Russia, President Putin in particular, for Iran’s full membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Baqeri referred to significant growth in military and defense cooperation between Iran and Russia in recent years and expressed the hope that good relations between the two countries will continue.

He said that Tehran and Moscow have been seriously pursuing the case of international terrorism, especially in Syria and Iraq over the past 10 years.

The general stressed that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei and President Ebrahim Raisi attach special significance to expansion of relations with Russia.
