Iran SCO membership to improve Caspian Sea economies

Rasht, IRNA - Addition of economic element to the security function of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), along with Iran's key role in the organization, can help develop littoral states and legal status of the Caspian Sea, an analyst opines.

Salaheddin Harsani, an international relations expert, told IRNA on Sunday that current developments in the region and Iran's need to economic multilateralism can persuade the SCO to embrace economic collaboration as one of its main objectives.

If the organization tends to alter the situation and accept economic function along with its security one, it can be expected that the member states will experience economic opening and progress in the future, the analyst noted.

Naming China and Russia as two main players in the SCO, who can lead the organization towards economic cooperation, the expert said that the logic, dominating foreign policies in Moscow and Beijing, as well as their attempt to protect their own national interests and prestige are playing as stumbling blocks in the way of promoting economic function of the organization.

It seems that as a result of the existing situation in the West Asia region, Russia and China are trying to strengthen multilateralism and coalition-building in order to prevent from losing geopolitical rivalry with the US, he added.

The freelance journalist also went on to say that economic cooperation among the SCO member states can create economic development in Iran particularly in free trade zones, as well as increase transit capacity in Anzali, Noshahr and Gorgan.

Iran conveys the message to the US that although Washington withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal in 2018 and re-imposed illegal economic sanctions on the Iranian nation, the Islamic country can count on multilateral cooperation with Russia and China, as well other SCO member states, he said, adding that Tehran will not rely on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in order to develop its economy.
