US shouldn’t delay rejoining JCPOA: Russian politician

Tehran, May 30, IRNA – Russian Liberal Democratic Party official Gennady Avdeev said that the US President Joe Biden shouldn’t delay rejoining the JCPOA, given the talks have begun over one month ago in Vienna.

Avdeev who is a senior advisor to the leader of Liberal Democratic Party leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky said in an interview with IRNA on Saturday that Biden should compensate for his predecessor Donald Trump’s mistake and the first step in doing so is to remove the sanctions imposed on Iran.

He said that the rejoining of the US to the nuclear deal was not easy because of the difficulty of issues involved and also the difficulty of reversing Trump’s legacy.

Reviving the JCPOA is a good indicator of whether the Biden administration is willing to distance from Trump’s legacy, the Russian politician said.

Noting that hawkish groups and extremist Republicans in the US, as well as the Israeli regime, are the main opponents of JCPOA revival, Avdeev said that they want political and economic pressure to remain on Iran.

He opined that the United States during the Trump administration was characterized by leaving international agreements and obligations, thus rejoining the Iran nuclear deal could be a good step in moving away from that notoriety.

Iran and five participants to the JCPOA have been moving forward with talks in Vienna to revive the deal by removing US sanctions against Iran and returning of Tehran to full compliance with the deal.

The fifth round of talks is now in progress and participants hope that it would be the final round after which an agreement can be reached on how the US should remove sanctions and how Iran should reverse compliance reduction measures.
