Motion to reciprocate US labeling IRGC is subject to debate

Tehran, April 22, IRNA – The Iranian Parliament (Majlis) motion to reciprocate US labeling the Islamic Revolution's Guards Corps (IRGC) was subject to further debate.

The Iranian Parliament on Monday addressed details of a double-urgency bill to take reciprocal action against US in reaction to designating Iranian elite force as “a foreign terrorist organization.”

The general outlines of the motion were approved by the legislature on April 16, with 204 votes in favor, two against, and no abstentions.

In today’s session, the Iranian MPs agreed to forward the bill to the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee with 185 votes in favor, 13 against, and one abstention.

Iranian parliament speaker Ali Larijani said the national security commission is now required to hold an extraordinary meeting to review the motion and clarify the ambiguities. Parliament will then put the revised motion on agenda on Tuesday's session, he added.

The bill includes provisions to designate all U.S. intelligence and security forces operating in Western Asia as terrorists and stipulates that any form of support for them will constitute a terrorist act.

The legislation also requires the Iranian government to use its political, legal and diplomatic resources to challenge the United States in the region and disrupt its ability to use its bases in the area.
