French director hails Iran's short films

Tehran, Nov 11, IRNA – The French short film director Emilie Dubois referred to prominent Iranian filmmakers like Abbas Kiarostami and Asghar Farhadi, and said the Iranian short films are well respected.

'I cannot tell for outside of France, but here Iranian cinema is well respected and recognized,' Dubois said in an exclusive interview with the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on the sidelines of the 35th Tehran International Short Film Festival which is underway in the Iranian capital city.

Referring to the importance of the current event in Tehran, she said, 'This is a great opportunity to meet with young filmmakers and producers from Iran.'

Commenting on the role of cinema in understanding the world, she said 'I think cinema is a great way of communicating through stories, images and sounds, the latter being universal language.'

Elaborating on the position of short films in France, Dubois said, 'There are many short film festivals in France, some of them are internationally known, such as, of course, Clermont-Ferrand.'

'But apart from the well-established ones, what is great is that you can also find smaller festivals that promote the short films and allow filmmakers and audience to connect on a local level, sometimes in small town that don’t even have a theatre all year long,' she added.

For much of her interview, she said 'short films are a great opportunity for directors, actors and technicians to practice and above all, experiment.'
