3 horse burials discovered in NW Iran

Tehran, Jan 16, IRNA - During the salvage explorations and the first zooarcheology of horse burial in Kurgan of Abellou, in East Azarbaijan Province, three horse burials in the northern side and outside the main grave were discovered.

The Public Relations Office of the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism (RICHT) quoted Mohammad Faizkhah, head of the archeological exploration team in Kurgan of Abellou as saying on Monday that after the removal of large rocks and the dust which had covered the skeletons, it was found out that there were two intact burials in the trench which was explored.

Only the skull and part of the hip and thigh bones of the third burial were revealed in the trench and the other parts remained in the wall of the trench of other kurgan and therefore it was not possible to continue exploration in the current season, he said.

Interestingly, just under the stomach and between the legs of the second horse which has the closest distance with the kurgan, a domesticated dog had also been buried, he added.

The archaeologist said that most parts of the skull and jaw have been broken and almost crushed, but the teeth are in good condition, adding that for the studies and measurement of various parts, the skull was removed altogether in order to be carefully examined in the next stages.
